The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) that is currently being debated on in Congress is a threat to the very way the internet works. With some very broad strokes used and some vague definitions it puts the power to censor or block any website that United States citizens view. Various experts in the internet, those who have helped move it forward and shape it, are speaking out about how badly this would cripple all the industries connected to it. Instead of listening to those who know what they are talking about our Congressmen are listening instead to the deep pockets of the movie industry and other such groups.

If our lawmakers want to pass a law that takes measures to stop online piracy then they need to enlist the aid of those whose job is the internet. The bill, as it currently stands, doesn't just need amendments. The bill needs to go back to the drawing board and get a complete rewrite with the input of those are educated enough in the structure of our online society. Not by Senators who have trouble telling the difference between a domain name and an IP address.
